For many years, treatment of breast cancer focused solely on prevention and removal of the actual tumour. Often far too little attention was paid to the physical and emotional effects of stressful cancer treatments. The current options presented by oncoplastic surgery today are holistic treatment concepts that allow for the best possible coordination of tumour removal and breast reconstruction. An expanded range of reconstructive methods has also reduced the fear many women have of undergoing a disfiguring operation. It is now indisputable that the least invasive, most breast-conserving intervention or immediate breast restoration substantially increases the patient's sense of self worth and helps her come to terms with the whole experience.

A competent, interdisciplinary team is essential for the delivery of successful breast cancer treatment. Apart from clinical services provided by surgeons, we have radiologists, cytologists and pathologists who are responsible for the diagnostic process. The actual treatment, (tumour removal and breast retention or reconstruction), is performed by an oncoplastic surgeon. Plastic surgeons with specialist breast cancer expertise are acutely aware of the importance of leading edge, strategically targeted treatment in the early stages of the disease and are also in a position to pay maximum attention to both the physical integrity and aesthetic concerns of the patient. Finally, oncologists are responsible for associated medication, post-operative care and regular check-ups. In cases where radiotherapy is required, a specialist radiotherapist is brought into the treatment team. The inclusion of a psychologist is often advisable and we are also quite happy to collaborate with your own gynaecologist if you wish.
